Their 2010 track “7 & 7” exemplifies this aesthetic, invoking the wistfulness of Uncle Tupelo or early Wilco with a melancholy fiddle and lyrics about running into an old flame in the middle of a grocery store. The gothic “Gin, Smoke, Lies” even opens with lyrics about the “the early autumn wind,” the song's harsh fiddle and pained lyrics suggesting a murder ballad without the deed ever being done.
