From the late '70s on, The Neville Brothers tapped New Orleans' melting-pot musical past to boldly redraw the contours of funk and R&B. Spacey early cuts such as “Washable Ink” leafed lovingly through jazz and folk motifs, and 1989's “Yellow Moon” mingled pop and reggae impulses. Before convening their sibling ensemble, Art Neville laid down wiry, much-sampled funk classics like “Cissy Strut” in The Meters and paid tribute to the music of the Mardi Gras Indians in The Wild Tchoupitoulas, while Aaron Neville cut sensitive, slow-burn soul sides like 1966's “Tell It Like It Is” and 1973's groove-laden “Hercules.”
