Heddle Nash as Faust; Robert Easton as Méphistophélès
Faust sees a vision of Marguérite sitting at her spinning wheel…
Faust: Heavenly vision!
Méphistophélès: She shall love thee! Shall she love thee?
Faust: Give me her! (eagerly reaching for the parchment to sign)
Méphistophélès: It is done!
Faust signs the pact. Méphistophélès picks up a goblet from the table
Méphistophélès: For the rest of the chapter, ’tis I who wait upon you,
To drain from your goblet the nectar of the sun.
No more of death – poison no more,
But life and freedom!
Faust: (taking the goblet and addressing the vision of Marguérite)
I am thine! I am thine! I am thine!
Angel from heav’n come down!
Faust drinks and is transformed into a young man
Méphistophélès: Come!
Faust: (the image of Marguérite has faded)
Shall I see her again?
Méphistophélès: It seems so!
Together: Away then! Away then! Away!
Be mine!
The delight of beauty’s caresses, her soft wavy tresses,
Her smile beaming bright; be mine (thine),
the warm current of blood in every vein,
The passion in torrent, which nothing can rein.
The rapture, where pleasure to time giveth flight!
O Youth, without measure! Be mine (thine), thy delight! (etc)
