The Path

At a split on a dirty road

I stood between paths unknown

The choice, mine and mine alone

As I wondered which way to go

I looked to count their bends

But couldn't see

Where they end

And as I stared, others passed me by

Never stopping to question why

Some down the left, some down the right

Until they were out of sight

As I wondered why

Why not left

Why not the right

And in my mind, whispered doubt

Every path, a winding route

And in the night, how could they know

Which path to take, where to go

Every road may twist and turn

Every bridge may crash or burn

One road shone with golden light

Worn-down earth, soft and bright

The other lay in shadowed hue

A path untamed, and lesser used

One seemed rough, the other mild

Yet both were wild

So I stepped where my feet led

Heart held tight, and filled with dread

And in my mind, banished doubt

On my path, a winding route

Maybe fate was guiding me

Maybe it was all on me

And the road may twist and turn

The bridges may crash or burn

So burn

And know the choice was mine alone

As I race to the unknown.
