Letra

I remember wood-paneled TV,
Or maybe Grandma's house.
A beard, some shorts, a hairy chest...
Don't ask what the show was about.
I remember staring too long,
Then looking away when someone came in.
Funny what the mind throws out.
Funny what it lets back in.
I forgot the plot,
I forgot his name.
Somewhere through the years
I even changed his face.
But I remember the feeling,
That strange little spark.
Before I had the words for it,
Something knew my heart.
Was it him in the rerun?
Were the shorts yellow or blue?
One old memory becomes three,
And none of them stay completely true.
But I remember wanting to watch again.
"I really liked the acting," I'd say.
God, I was terrible at lying...
Even when I didn't know I was gay.
Now I'm older,
And I remember less.
Names disappear, years get tangled,
Faces trade places in my head.
But I remember the feeling.
Maybe that's what memories do.
Those men didn't make me who I am...
They helped me recognize who I was.
So here's to the faces I've forgotten,
And the ones that somehow stayed.
I thought I was looking back at them...
When they were looking back at me.
