Слова

The sweater remembers a different shoulder,
a faint perfume of last October folded in the cuffs.
I hold it up to the lamp and solve for evening—
x equals warmth, y equals time that doesn’t hurry.
Harp-quiet threads ring like coins in a jar;
I count them out loud to check the math of comfort.
One for the bus stop with polite rain,
two for the seat by the window that forgives late arrivals,
three for a laugh that never learned to write but signs its name anyway.
A loose stitch raises its hand; I answer with a needle,
borrow a line of moonlight and stitch it back in place.
The accordion of the room breathes soft and wide,
walls expanding to fit all the stories the sleeves remember.
Pockets keep their own ledger—
a folded receipt, a mint from a stranger, a map drawn in pencil.
Buttons balance the column of wind,
clicking once for yes, twice for stay a little longer.
I set the totals on the table and the numbers lean toward mercy.
Outside, trees practice subtraction,
leaves falling until the branches solve to zero.
Inside, I add a scarf to the sum and the answer turns amber.
Steam writes brackets around my face;
I check the proof in a fogged circle on the glass.
If the night asks for evidence, I’ll show my sleeves:
thumbholes worn into soft parenthesis,
a margin where I tuck small sentences to finish later.
Every stitch is a quiet digit;
together they make a language the weather understands.
I try the sweater on and the room relaxes—
lamplight nods, the chair forgives the day’s arithmetic.
Out on the step, the street balances itself in streetlight decimals,
and my shoes start counting calmly to somewhere that isn’t far.
I carry the answer with both hands,
not perfect, but exact enough for now.
If I lose track, I’ll count again from the cuffs inward,
until the sum of warmth equals this walk,
and the evening signs off with my name written twice.
