Lyrics

I've been driving trucks for thirty years
On roads in every state
Swapping yarns and drinking beer
With lots of truckie mates
I had always thought those stories
Of hallucinations grim
Were gross exaggerations
Just to get the listeners in
But then one day it happened
Back in 1979
In the little town of Wallabadah
On the Tamworth-Sydney line
It was getting close to midday
I was fortified with beans
On my homeward run of seven days
With little sleep between
Around the pub in Wallabadah
And all along the road
Were vintage cars and people
Dressed in 19th century clothes
Women wearing bustles, yeah
And men in swallow tails
And horses there in buggies
They were tied to hitching rails
My trembling hands were sweating
And they tightly gripped the wheel
My heart was racing madly
And my head began to reel
I had read in science fiction books
About the time machine
Now this little town had been
Put back to a 19th century scene
Well, I stopped the rig at Willow Tree
Into the pub I ran
Ordered double brandy that I drank
With trembling hands
And when my nerves had settled down
I told the crowded bar
The awful thing the time machine
Had done to Wallabadah
Oh, they taunted me and strung me on
And kept me in suspense
They doubled up with laughter
While they joked at my expense
Until an old man said to me
The strange thing you did see
Was just a celebration
For the town's centenary
Oh, strike a light
There ought to be a law against it
I was scared stiff
Thought it was some kind of work of a time machine
Man was a bundle of nerves
Oh, there's no wonder a man drinks
