Brazilian señora walking down the street

Stops me at the crossroads and says to me

“Hola señorita, tu habla Portuges?”

So I said no, I shook my head. She said

“You should have more pride in your heritage”

But I’m the Caribbean type of South American,

Furthermore I’m equally Jewish and Bajan,

Equally black and caucasian,

Geographically, I guess I’m Eurasian,

Getting to the point I guess what I’m saying is

I’m not offended, so don’t think I’m upset,

It’s just that what you think you see,

Isn’t always what you get,

And I’m alright

Native American, a little bit of Bajan,

One Grandad from Guyana, the other was a Jew

So when I say I’m mixed race, you know it’s true that

Black and white’s just too simplistic

There’s a whole lots more that’s missing

All their neat little boxes but they can’t really box me

I keep ticking “mixed/other” undefined by a colour
