Lyrics

Circles was the
very first song that I created for Geometry
and was
what helped me shape the storyline
for the remainder of the project
In this piece
Iris is pretty much acknowledging
the complicated nature of her
quote unquote long term
friends with benefits situation with Janine
And...
She's so fed up with
the fact that Janine has been stringing her along
that she finally decides to speak up about it
So, the first half of the song has this frantic nature musically
while the energy behind the lyrical performance
carries this passive agressive tone
although the content is very much so direct
I chose to write this part
of the song in 5-8
which is an assymetric meter
because it hints at the discord that
Iris is experiencing internally and externally
In the second half of the song
the tone of the music switches to signify that
Iris has shifted her energy a bit
and is, you know
approaching this situation with a clearer mind than before
I also changed the meter to 4-4 here because
it's the most common and easily recognizable
um... and it represents a hint
of stability and clarity
So, like... the music isn't busy and I
made sure that I created
lots of open space and breathing room sonically
to represent that
Now although Janine isn't completely off the hook at this point
Iris realizes that
she actually had an equal part in
creating the conditions that caused her frustration
So in the process of coming to terms
with the fact that things might not really change
Iris is pretty much like
Yo like, just let me go and leave me alone
We gon' love each other from afar
cuz this situationship ain't really healthy
But, there's a plot twist when Janine
who we hear as Shaelle
explains that her actions have been completely misinterpreted
I felt that Shaelle had the perfect vocal timbre
for Janine's character because
it has this sultry edge to it
and Janine defintely uses the art of seduction to pacify Iris
So, after Janine tries to clear up the confusion
we're somewhat left wondering
whether or not Iris actually buys into it
Now listen to circles with new ears and understanding
