Lyrics

I hold the sea close by.
I let it in and I
let it out again.
I’ve shut the wind outside,
couldn’t stand it
howling me to come around.
Saying, “You know just where this one ends”
and “You who come to fruit
if you should wake someone salute,
but pave the way
unless they too extend.”
For Sunday is a holiday
and those who want to work must learn to wait
for those who want to stay and have a few.
Well that my love,
I’ll gladly do.
It scarcely is the afternoon
when we sit down and watch the rising moon.
A strange brood, with such beauty,
hanging around
nightly.
With no root,
just glory tempting you away.
What are you doing tomorrow?
Well, if it rains we will go to the sea
and we’ll lay there on the dark coast with the
light lashing and looking like your hair was never
gleaming.
I could lay there on the East Coast
and I’d turn ashen looking for you all laying there.
Remembering when we were tapping our feet
to prevent us falling asleep
at the wheel and keeping our glances fleeting.
Telling our friends,
“This is the bitter end, come and see me and get
your hearts racing.”
Hoarding our meals
and discovering fears upon fears.
Each time we’d meet,
like a couple of kids
laying out in the dark until we’d hear
our mother’s call.
“Oh you, come down from that room and be fed
too.”
For angels have ruled right over this root,
even they’re keeping their lights on.
Even they are keeping it right on.
Where we are going we’ll find more war.
Our time has no harder thing than going on
knowing what was you, what was I,
what was the ebb of the tide
falling as it did, as it does and it always will do.
Well what do you know?
There was no-one stealing the show.
Back at the root
you lay on the beach,
watching the sun trying to reach
up from the sharp feeling of night’s press
and I loved you into the dark, strange brood.
Such beauty!
Hanging around for a rise.
