Before bed I'd read'em the letters though they could not understand

They seemed to hear your voice coming through them

Oh I was so excited to see you, knew what I was gonna wear

 Picked my outfit out for months before

Lord help me I've tried

I tried to stand before you

But you're not of the same mind

That carried me to our bed

And I look so hard right at you

For some sign that you're coming back

Went to fight, gave it all I could

For the common man, for the common good

But what I actually did was unspeakable

The man I was is far from sight

Too many wrongs can't make a right

 And I don't want to ruin your memory of me

  God help me I've tried

Tried to stay alive

 For sake of my bride and the wee ones at home

 But now I can't shut my eyes

Cause then I see it all again

I don't want to live but I can't leave you, so here I am
