Lyrics

You know that I, I almost left you (what?) Hangin' there for a minute
Like, I thought we're not gonna stop, because, so
Um, you know, probably, it was okay, I just
You know, I just couldn't find the chord (I know) that key
That happens (even, in fact) to me all the time
I just couldn't, I mean, I'm lookin' at it
But I couldn't find (I know, I know, I know)
Well, the, the fact that, I mean, that you accompany yourself
I guess, I guess you know how, how these things
Oh, listen, it can be a render sometimes
I can be playin', and all of a sudden, I'm, I'm hittin' one note
And the chord has nothing whatsoever to do with it
But I just make believe it does
And I just, uh, yeah, I can-
'Cause half the time, uh, you know, people are just-
They're so busy lookin' at me sittin' at the piano
Not thinkin' that I can do that
Well, 'cause I don't do it all the time, so sometimes I surprise people
So they don't hear the bad, the bad notes sometimes
Well, I mean, you're a, a fine musician
You kn- you know how to take the, the, whatever you're playin'
Just play the chords so that it works out
You know (thank you) that's what happens (thank goodness, yes, indeed)
That's what happens (yeah)
Meanwhile, I want to see you do both of your things
Play and sing another number
(Oh) and this is a Duke thing that I don't know too well
'I Never Felt This Way Before'
Yeah, it's a great, I'd share a story about this
He, he came when I was playing in Chicago at a club
He came, and this is many, many years ago
And his band was in town
He came there to see me which really thrilled me
Because I was just an intermission pianist
There was, uh, I don't know
I was e- either Jackie and roll-eye with the Headliners
Or Anita O'Day, 'cause I used to be, uh, um
Intermission pianist for these folks in Chicago
Anyway, he came there to see me, and I
He, he, I asked him, would he play something for me?
'Cause you know, I wanted to show him off, you know
So he got up on the stand, he played something
A few things, and I said, "Play a song of yours that I love
And I play a lot, and I'd like to hear you play
I haven't heard you play it"
And I said, "Play 'I Never Felt This Way Before'"
He said, "How does it go?"
Well, I thought like- I said
"Get down off of that stand! I'll play"
And I went up and played it for him
