We came as heroes Sincerest charity in mind The saviours of the hopeless All alms and honest kindness We left as villains Despoilers of disease Nightmare prevails as always We spoiled our precious grain And tainted is the water No birds of song remain We came as saviours To bathe you in our grace But now the seeds of downfall we have sown In the barren ground The barren ground!
