As the countdown continues and enters the final stage

the last remaining few gather their belongings and head for the port

The shiny ships await by the towers, ready to launch a new beginning

In the gathering gloom faces project the sorrow and fear, sprinkled with hope

Men, women, children with parcels tugged tight under their arms flock at the gates

ready to board the last departure

The sun was setting over the small crowd, with a bright red halo of beauty

as if to mock the leaving race with its paradox

Indeed a delightful sight, yet still indisputable proof of the pride and arrogance

that self-same race had cast upon their own home.

Wonder what went wrong

Will we ever learn?

What's the final song?

Where's the final turn?

The signs had been ignored for decades by those in power,

and by those to whom profit was God

Only a few dared to speak out, and were considered madmen, fanatics and even dangerous

So business went on as it always does, earning profit for the few

And the plants continued to eat up the sparse resources,

spewing out smoke and fume, until the sky was covered in tiny particles,

in which the light would fracture, and give such beautiful sunsets

And the majority would close their eyes to the truth, until it was far, far too late

We are left to pray

Upon realizing the inevitable disaster, blame was issued, but never taken

The final solution was conceived, a fleet, in which to flee,

yet it would be reserved for a select few

As the decree was issued, panic spread

and the former so civilized people was reduced to a raving mob

Each man for himself, showing the primal behaviour of a predator

Destroying in the process what little was left

Numbers were reduced by the billions until only a few remained

Now standing on the ramp, the flock looks back at the wasteland behind

With regret? Yes! Guilt? Maybe, but Armageddon bears many faces

and this one is definitely human

And in the roar of combustion and fumes the silver spears leave the burning rock
