Lyrics

I spend the day filling an empty frame
With bits of things I thought that I wanted
The morning dries like paint and chips away
I laugh okay, you seem like you bought it
I thought there were all these reasons
That I should stick the course and follow my safest feelings
But I rewind all the tapes, rewrite the lines I screwed up
I didn’t know there were rules to talking tough
Back in those days you’d knock the whole room flat
I’d hear you soar up into the nosebleeds
All those years that’s where I always sat
And time was all that hiding bought me
And I know that you had your reasons
And they were good ones too
so good I could taste the feeling
But still nothing gets past me
‘Cause no one treads soft enough
I didn’t think there were rules to talking tough
And they say
“No one knows you when you’re down and out”
When I get up above it
I’ll find another story I can write myself into
And drift into a new life
We let the cold year slowly slither by
All of our fears were out of the question
The lakes dried up, the forests petrified
We lost our grip, we couldn’t feel the tension
And I thought that I had my reasons
But they were excuses too
And I was too quick to appease them
If a good thing drifts towards me
If I can make room enough
I’ll forget there were rules to taking tough
And they say
“No one knows you when you’re down and out”
When I get up above it
I find another story I can write myself into
And drift into a new life
And I’m sure we all have our reasons
To hold these big parades for all our small achievements
We’re the ones for the job
Proud to take the fall
Maybe there were never rules to this at all
