When I was a kid
The grass wasn't grey
It wasn't the sun
Burned the lines that you see
On my face
The colors were real
The sound of the trees
The smell of the rain
The heat swept away
By the breeze
There's nowhere to hide
There's a hole in the sky
And the canyons are flooded with light
Everyone knows
They pretend like they don't
And keep on deflecting the blame
I'm learning to live with the shame
We loved with restraint
We danced on our toes
We filled up our lungs
For fear that our hearts
Would explode
We knew it was pure
They poisoned our heads
Their lies and advice
Left naive little lovers misled
We became self aware
Innocence became fear
But its anger that tends to prevail
We keep on our ways
We work through the maze
And try not to step on the cracks
While we burn everything in our path
