Lyrics
On a small square of land,
staked out for the damned,
sits a one room cabin,
where smoke curls blacken
walls of mud and stone.
In her tattered dress,
she crosses the floor,
to meet me, a beggar,
standing at her half door.
Blue ribbons in her hair,
She holds my rough hands,
and through the still warm air,
takes me to the sea.
Seaweed gatherers,
their bodies, skin and bone,
heave their baskets,
along a mile of stone.
As by fields grown sour,
we stumble and pray,
for the rare warm hour,
at the close of day.
The sea within reach,
we leave our tattered rags,
strewn on the beach,
and after the cold waves'
first cruel sting fades,
in the calm, I sing:
Close your eyes Marie
Let the weight of the water hold you
Close your eyes Marie
Let the weight of the water hold you
Close your eyes Marie
Let the weight of the water hold you
Close your eyes Marie
Let the weight of the water hold you
And dream yourself far from here.
