Lyrics
There’s a saying that a weed is just a plant
Growing somewhere it’s not wanted
As I look at all the grasses coming up between the bricks
I wonder if that’s true
‘cause it seems to me when times are tough
These little plants do all the heavy lifting
And whether it’s a flood or drought
The dandelions always sprout
A sprinkling of green across the land
Dolly said wildflowers don’t care where they grow
Humble as they beautify the roadsides
Wherever humans go
They leave a scar across the land
‘til the weeds come up
With a healing hand
I bet you didn’t know that weeds
Are very often edible for humans
Perhaps they need to compensate
For all the chaos they create for gardeners
We argue over climate change
While dressed from head to toe in polyester
And meanwhile in the sad abandoned corners of the world
The thistles photosynthesise without complaint
Dolly said wildflowers don’t care where they grow
Humble as they beautify the roadsides
Wherever humans go
They leave a scar across the land
‘til the weeds come up
With a healing hand
Perhaps we should recalibrate
The way we think about the world around us
And realise that we can’t control
The seasons or the weather
Or the bindis in our lawn
We think we’re so important
In our fortresses of glass and steel
But buttercups and honeybees
And paper daisies in the breeze
Remind us what is real
Dolly said wildflowers don’t care where they grow
Humble as they beautify the roadsides
Wherever humans go
They leave a scar across the land
‘til the weeds come up
With a healing hand
