While out with my wife and my family one day

In the pinewoods of Jersey on a short holiday

I walked in a dream where the native once plowed

And down cross his bog that lay idle now

And what I saw there brought a chill down my spine

It made me remember a long ago time

We were hunting one day through the oaks and the pines

For meat for the table in the cold wintertime

And I spot five red cedars that grew in a row

And I asked my father why this was so

And he turned to me with a look in his eye

And I knew I had touched him someplace deep inside

He said I’m not sure but it brings me to mind

Of a story I heard in a long ago time

The family that lived here did eat of bad meat

And so all together their maker did meet

And I think those red cedars that grow in a line

Most probably mark where those Lenape lie

For the red cedar lives for a mighty long time

And down here in the Pinelands no stone do we find

And sometimes back then when Lenape died

They’d plant a red cedar to mark where they’d lie

So I told my family as of now i’ve told you

This story I heard that I think may be is true

And I hope Lenape sleep peaceful and still

Where the red cedar grows on the side of the hill
