Lyrics

Let me tell you about a lonesome journey
When I was hiking in the mountains, all alone
Well I had walked all day with my 70-pound pack
And my feet, they were getting tired
So I stopped in a cozy, little, sun-lit clearing
And proceeded to rest my bones
Well I was thankful for my health and for the silence of the woods
And for the beauty of my temporary home
Staring at the sky
With the sunlight in my eyes
As I leaned against the tree that'd seen so many days gone by
I had to stop, and wonder
Well the hurricane was blowing that day that I set out
From the safety of the Carolina shore
And while the captain was blind he cried, "Full speed ahead!"
As he pushed the engines up to a roar
"Oh Lord!" I cried, "Remember me? Your lowly servant could use you right now
And if you set my feet back onto solid ground
I'll go to church, some day and somehow!"
Storm clouds racing by
As the sea was raging high
As I felt the waves that'd made so many young widows cry
Just had to stop, and wonder
In the dead of night, with the world turned off
The icy silence was shattered by the call
Of a frightened voice in need of help
Echoing down the darkened hall
"Don't get involved" that old voice said
"Stay away; keep yourself from harm
Leave it up to those with nothing better to lose
To step on up and sound the alarm
Standing here, outside
Thinking back on that sad and lonesome cry
What did I do, What did I say
I didn't even try, no I
And looking back
I've gotta' wonder why....
