Hand Me Down House

A rustic two-story at the end of a gravel drive

Uhaul backed to the front steps, now empty inside

Cardboard boxes we ain’t unpacked

Fresh coat of paint that ain’t dry yet

A whole lot of stuff that we still gotta get

But it ….

Won’t be hard to call it a home

Three generations made it their own

Live, Love, and laughing, filling up the halls

Pencil marks moving up a kitchen wall

It stood strong through every kinda season

Looked on, people growing up and leaving

No better place to start brand new, now

Than, in this hand-me-down house

These bones go all the way back to 1945

And while the world kept changing, they stood the test of time

Grandfather clock still ticks away

Red cedar stairs squeak every day

For us, that’s the sound of a brand-new start

Won’t be hard to call it a home
