Lyrics

Tommy was a trapper back in 1885
He had a calling and a loving for the wild
The Pay was never higher for the labor of his love
But you can’t put no value on his great desire
Lilly became his wife on a cold September night
She was as pretty as the mountains on the coast
Her heart was pure and sturdy with a softness in her eyes
But she knew when those leaves turned dry he’d have to go
And he’d say I’ll see you when the old creek starts to rise
Look north you’ll see the night dancing in the skies
And I’ll be watching right there with you as he turned and said goodbye
Put his gun back in the scabbard and rode off into the night
Well the night grew long and heavy and the days were surely bright
As he thought of is sweet Lilly back at home
She was longing for the touch of her Tommy she couldn’t find
But the words that he left with her burned on strong
When he said I’ll see you when the old creek starts to rise
Look north you’ll see the night dancing in the skies
And I’ll be watching right there with you as he tipped his hat goodbye
Put his gun back in the scabbard and rode off into the night
Sometimes the trail goes cold
And you’ll see what means the most
You’ll come to find you wind through the pines
They’ll always lead you home
Well their love goes on forever as her hair turns grey and old
She knew that it was time for him to go
As Lilly held him tight he softly whispered so
With a tremble of his voice all that Lilly needed to know
He said I’ll see you when the old creek starts to rise
Look north you’ll see me dancing in the skies
And I’ll be dancing right there with you slowly fading of his eyes
One last seat into the saddle and rode off into the night
One last seat into the saddle and rode off into the night
