Lyrics

Return Journey

Came out here in nineteen sixty-four
I've never been this far from home before
In Greenage Village I heard Bob Dylan sing
A song called Blowing In The Wind

I was living rough up in the Bronx back then
When a call came into me from uncle Sam
He said son I'm kind of in a jam
So I am sending you to Vietnam
In the end he said I'd have to go
The communists are trying to run the show
But you see we can't let it slide
You know god is always on our side
Gi's came, and gi's went as you know
J.F.K. he said I warned you so
The body count grew greater day by day
Just couldn't give those purple hearts away
Children scream and die from napalm burns
But the generals said it was just their turn
For in the end you know we'll all be gone
Then we'll leave them to the vietcong

I did my best as best I could
But in the end I knew it t'would do no good
For the red haired boy from Abbeyfeild
lying cold and dead in a Paddy field
But all war's end or so it's said
And life goes on except but for the dead
The red haired boy was far too young to die
And Nixon didn't even tell him why
Then one night I took a midnight plane
That took me all the way back home again
Things had changed a lot since way back then
Old friends gone since god knows when
I stood in Neary's bar on Chatham street
I hoped that Benny Colfer I may meet
I knew it was a waste of time you see
For her father didn't have much time for me
I was well into my second pint of stout
When I heard somebody raise a shout
Yankee soldier drink up your beer
For sure as God we don't want you here
I thought it best for me to leave the bar
Before this kind of craic had gone too far
But then he smiled and took me by the arm
He said sorry man I didn't mean no harm
I see your back from vietnam
I suppose you know nobody gives a damn
It's on the tele-news most every night
But you can't see blood in black and white
I made to leave the pub and end this game
He said I don't even know your name
I said if you really want to know
Then Washington's the place where you should go
There you'll find a long black marble wall
With fifty thousand names in all
And among the names like all the rest
You'll find my name in gold etched on its breast
