Lyrics

When I came in, my head was covered
We left our shoes outside the door
I went upstairs with the women
And we sat upon the floor
I made room for her beside me
We shook hands and gave our names
Her eyes were dark, her name was Nyla
She said she moved here with her family
From far away, nine years or so
She’d never cared too much for praying
Until five months ago
Because her son died in October
I reached out and touched her arm
And my heart went out to Nyla
Down below the vigil started
And we all bowed down in prayer
Then one by one we heard the speakers
Lieutenant governor and the mayor
And then the pastors and the rabbis
And then the sheriff and the Sikh
And then beside me I heard Nyla
She whispered, All these people talking
And nobody says one word
Of concentration camps in China
That is where my son was burned
A million Muslims being held there
That is where my son was killed
And Nyla fell to weeping
We all nestled in around her
One woman wrapped her in her arms
A little toddler gave her kisses
I took her hand and held it firm
A woman asked me what had happened
It is her son, I replied
It is the son of Nyla
When it was done, I turned and told her
I know my words can’t be enough
She said, If you don’t believe me
Go on Google, look it up
She pleaded, All the Jewish people
It seems like they should understand
For who was there for them?
I told Nyla I’m a singer
I can tell it in a song
Into her eyes there came a light
Just for a flash, then it was gone
We embraced and then we parted
She disappeared into the crowd
I said farewell to Nyla
When I got home I went on Google
I need not tell you what I saw
Just more human cruelty
Somehow justified by law
Well you don’t have to be an expert
To know that something has to change
Or you get more of the same
It’s so easy to feel helpless
Not knowing what to do or say
To stop injustices in China
Or any other earthly place
Hatred in a Pittsburgh temple
And in New Zealand in a mosque
Now at a vigil held in Denver
Nyla shows me what it cost
And so I’m telling you this story
Because I told her that I would
And then I saw that tiny glimmer
Of maybe something called hope
That shone in the eyes of Nyla
