I was in a cap and gown, he was in the bleachers

Guess Mama and her movie star looks weren't enough to keep him

'Cause he was gone by 6 a.m. while the rest of us were sleeping

I woke up to a letter on my dresser

Saying, "This ain't our goodbye"

I guess he tried his best, and I have to believe

He would've shown me how to love

But all he knew was how to leave

Back in town for Christmas, we don't celebrate together

A twenty minute coffee where we talk about the weather

I don't have the heart to say how I learned that lesson

So I laugh the life he gave me

And I try to hide my mama when I smile
