Lyrics

Daddy's fate was sealed when he was stuck in a blizzard
And a vein burst in his head
Came down the mountain in a storm
And three days later he was dead
When it was clear his time was near we told him we'd be okay
Gave him his last sip of beer
And he drifted away
Mikey was only 48 years old when it all caught up with him
Wasted away to bag of bones and the doctors had nothing for him
And he loved those goddamn mountains
With every breath it's true
That's where we left his ashes
He's part of the mountain now too
Dougie's dead 6 weeks after Mike
We never saw his pain
Until he took a .40 caliber bullet
And put it through his brain
And we will never know why cause
He didn't leave a note
I think it's those fucking mountains
Playing some kind of joke
Momma died years ago
She died on the east coast
She died in the Piedmont hills
When the cancer took it's toll
Shes' a good West Virginia girl
She's buried back home
Buried on family land
Among the mountain folk
You might love the grandeur
Of the Rocky Mountain High
But for me and my family
We go the mountains to die
You might love the beauty
Of an Appalachian Sky
But for me and my family
We go to the mountains to die
Daddy was a working man
He worked himself to the bone
He retired just in time
For the bank to steal his home
He went up to the mountaintop
To spend time with his sons
In due time the mountain came
And claimed the souls of everyone
Mikey had gifted hands
He could fix most anything
Dougie liked playing his music He'd pick up his guitar and sing
And they all lived together
At least for a time
But then everything changed
When daddy went and died
You might love the grandeur
Of the Rocky Mountain High
But for me and my family
We go the mountains to die
You might love the beauty
Of an Appalachian Sky
But for me and my family
We go to the mountains to die
There aren't many of us left
And I'll have to wait and see
If some godforsaken mountain
Beckons and calls on me
Pulls me up to the summit
Up among the stars
At least I know my family
Won't be very far
You might love the grandeur
Of the Rocky Mountain High
But for me and my family
We go the mountains to die
You might love the beauty
Of an Appalachian Sky
But for me and my family
We go to the mountains to die
