The Storm

Yea the river was getting higher

And the sun was going down

All the old folks were saying

They ain’t seen nothing like this since they’d been around

There was rapids up over the bridge

We couldn’t make it to the other side

They used to call this place New Hope

But there wasn’t none that night

They brought in the fire department

Made of mostly volunteers

They were blocking off the roads

Where the water flowed

There was no way in or out of here

So we headed for the mountain

In search for higher ground

I had one last look before that river took

Half the whole damn town

And they’ll say it was the storm that killed us

Yea but they won’t talk about

That long before that Hurricane

Long before the rain

We had already drown

Not long before that storm

They built a road going around

So the passer through’s, they wouldn’t have to come to

Our little forsaken town

And now these crops were all we had

And they were gone overnight

Yea the state might have called that highway progress

Except for those they left behind

And they’ll say it was the storm that killed us

Yea but they won’t talk about

That long before that Hurricane

The water it finally receded

And the damage was fully seen

Most people would have left

But around here I guess

We don’t back down easily

I know it’ll be hard to rebuild

But I’ll damned if I’m leaving now

Just like my dad and my family before him

This is where they’ll put me in the ground
