Lyrics

On a cold Port City night in March of 1810
Sam Jocelyn rode his horse never to return again
Entombed in frosty waters thrown from his horse so high
In the icy Cape Fear River poor Sam Jocelyn died
My name is Alex Hostler and sorrow’s creeping in
For the body in the river was my dearest friend
We made a deal that the first to die would speak from beyond the grave
So, the other man would rest assured that the dead one’s soul was saved
They laid him six feet underneath the St. James burying ground
The wind, it shook the willows with a hollow lonesome sound
Two days I sat alone at home, an aching in my head
For Sam had ridden his last ride and then they found him dead
The next night as I lay awake, I heard it loud and clear
Sam Jocelyn called my name out loud and at my bed appeared
“How could you let them bury me when I was still alive?”
I told him that they tried and tried but he could not be revived
I lay in bed the next two nights to soothe my tangled brain
But at my side his ghost appeared and cried my name again
“Unearth my body, dig my grave, and then you’ll know the truth”
I took my shovel and my lamp, set out to see the proof
My shovel scraped the dirt until it hit the casket lid
The coffin top was loosened and the wood, it quickly split
Sam Jocelyn’s body lay below, facedown and soaked in blood
His fingers shredded to the bone and his right hand stained with mud
I haven’t slept a night in seven months since Sam has died
My dearest friend he kept his word, his presence I denied
Now, I’m bound to watch his grave and drown in pain and woe
I scream and cry, “I’m sorry Sam, I swear I didn’t know”
