Lyrics

From Hounslow Heath to London, the mail coach does ride
With Gold inside and more beside, see the Lord and Lady ride.
One hand at his pistol, the other to his purse,
And at his side, his Lady bride, will this ride hide a curse?
And out of the darkness, comes the call that they fear.
Cry 'stand', cry 'deliver' up the gold you hold so dear.
The coachman on his box, regal passengers below
Know when to hold and when to fold
And when the Lord to pray
Come dance with me by moonlight,
My sweet Lady Anne,
We'll dance away 'til daylight
At the Moonlight Pavane.
Come what may I know some day
I'll be dancing in the air
So you can pay on the dark highway
With a dance without a care
The Lady Anne is braver than her trembling husband here
She is quite determined to show the thief no fear
So when demanded money she offered but a song
Which accepted by the highway man, with an offer to Pavanne
Cry music cry melody
cry for the dance till dawn
The Lady Anne by moonlight, a vision, dream, a trance
The highwayman they call Duval, takes her hand to dance.
And so they dance in the cold night air, dance the night away.
Claude Duval the highwayman, and the Lady Anne so fair.
They dance themselves to storyland, a new legend made
Of the dancing dandy highwayman, and the Moonlight Pavane
The Judge and Jury quickly
Found the highwayman quite guilty
And head held high to Tyburn, in his cart did ride.
The Lady Anne was there, condemned to sit and stare
In the crowd to watch Duval, dance one final time.
The drummer beat so slowly, as they tightened up the rope
Then stopped…
…as he moved upward, farewell to final hope
Then he stepped without a care
From the top of the stair
And danced his final dance alone
Danced upon the air.
