Lyrics

I don't know that there's any other song on the record that has a
Story that precedes it more than "Paris". We did go to Paris as part
Of this writing trip that produced five or six of these songs on this
Record for one night, and we... it was Bastille Day which is their
National holiday in July, and we were there for one night so we went
Out and had a nice dinner and went out for drinks afterwards, and of
Course the town was on fire, everybody was out, and... nobody
Expected this, nobody ever expects things like this, but as we tried
To get a cab at the end of the night back to the hotel, there was an
Altercation between the cab driver and a young American kid. Very
Strange, the cab driver got out of the car and started pushing this
American kid, he was clearly looking for a fight. And we were all
You know, it was late, we'd all had drinks, we were trying to get
A cab and Troy kind of jumped in as a kind of a knee-jerk response
And said "Hey man, what are you doing?" or whatever, and this cab
Driver, who was massive, just smoked Troy in the face. It was a
Really hard punch, like, I remember the sound. Troy went tumbling
Down the street, end over end. Blair and I chased after him and the
Cab driver got in his car, there was some talk of him having a knife
So we got Troy up and kind of pulled him to another bar that was kind
Of closing and they were shutting down. They were really good, they
Came out and brought a bunch of, like, napkins, 'cause there was
Literally... he was bleeding quite a bit. And then it became, you
Know, get him to a hospital and he got to a hospital. Nobody spoke
English, there was very little English, so I was relying on my un
Petit peu of French sometimes to get the job done. And so the next
Day, I think Troy got out of the hospital something like eleven in
The morning or something, and we got on the train, like still
Bloodstained, believe it or not, and went back to London. And Troy
Stayed on for another writing trip and Blair and I flew home, but...
This song was not written then, but written several months later in
Hindsight, and there's... it remains one of the most asked-about
Songs that I've ever written in terms of the lyric. The lyric is
Very... it's rather cryptic, but it literally taken is a dramatic
Account of that night. And there's a lot of things that were in
The air, it was shortly after 9/11, so there's some like European
Anti-American undertones in there, and just some things that
Were kind of being felt at the time. And it presents as a love
Song, and in a sense it is, figuratively, but it's also... if
I read it as one of the writers down, it presents to me like
A literal account of that night. Strangely enough, Faith Hill
Would hear it at some point and put it on her record, on really
The last record she made, and it's the last cut on that record
