It was me and Rebecca Seltzer after the Charity Ball

Hoyt Lake, light snow, overcast

29 mile per hour winds, woo!

She'd brought some duct tape and some Steel Reserve 40 ounces

And she said she was gonna teach me how to play Edward Fortyhands

So she took my hands and taped a 40 to both of em

I sat there with my hands all taped like a mummy

And y'know, we'd gone to the dance together, but it's high school

I dunno, you could go with anybody, you could go with your neighbor

But she looks me in the eyes

In this way that feels suddenly supercharged

And she says "y'know Mr. Danger

I know for a fact you haven't kissed before."

And I said "well how'd you know that?" and she said "cuz you told me."

And I said "oh yeah."

And she says "you've got this weird swag

You're carrying yourself all wrong."

And I said "well how am I supposed to carry myself?"

And she said "however you want

You've just gotta lean in and kiss me."

And I said "okay."

And I leaned in, slowly

And I closed my eyes

And then I opened my eyes

And for a weird moment, even though it was nighttime

December in Buffalo NY – pitch-black, cold

For a moment I felt a blinding light strike me

And it enveloped me

Not just me, not just her, not just the world around me

But my present, my past, and my future

And in that moment I felt the light guide me to where I had to be

And I just felt it for a second

But it gave me something I've been chasing ever since

Something I don't even know the name of
