Lyrics

I stood at the central station
Waiting for my man
I went across this goddamn nation
Just to hold his hand
I waited there for hours
But he didn't show up
So I called him on the phone
But he wouldn't pick up
And I don't know what this fuss is about
I see a dead man walking tonight
So I jumped into a cab
And I threw my luggage in
I was thinking about madness
I was thinking about sin
We stopped outside his house
And I climbed up onto the roof
I looked down through the window
And I realized that he had moved
And he don't know what he's dealing with here
But I see a dead man walking somewhere
And I landed on the front porch
I knocked at the door
A lady called Marie said
"He don't live here anymore"
"Oh, do you know by any chance," I said, "where to find him?
'Cause my heart seems to beat right through my skin
And I don't know why he's hiding from me
Or is he a dead man walking, Marie?"
So I stole a bike in the garden
I headed for the street
And I left my suitcase o'er land
So I thought I'd call it quits
I went down to the airport
And I boarded the next flight
I figured I could be in Spain by night
I don't know what he's doing here really
Or is he a dead man walking from me?
I fell asleep over New York
And I woke up in Madrid
The only man I long for
Is so quiet and well hid
I paid a taxi driver way too much to go downtown
When I got to his apartment, he was gone
He don't know that he's driving me insane
I see a dead man walking from Spain
At a diner in a harbour
My hunger got appeased
But I'm still a starver
When it comes to being pleased
And as the ship came in, I sneaked aboard on the left side
I didn't have no money or no pride
And I don't know why he keeps degrading me
I see a dead man walking by sea
The sense of being seasick
Made me dizzier than before
I grabbed a yellow Moppe
As we got into the shore
A man back in Madrid say you spent time in Marrakech
And I think I just laid eyes on your mistress
And I don't know how the two of you did it
But I see a dead woman walking right there
I went up to the beach house
It had a lovely view
And as I further in the sand
I saw not just one kid but two
And they just stared at me and said, "Dad, who's that lady?
I've never seen her in my life, trust me"
And I want the stranger out of my house
What's the dead man talking about?
So I sat down in the kitchen
I told him 'bout the pain
I spoke of how I missed him
And he said, "You're insane
I'm calling the police because you need to go home
They're gonna take you back to where you came from"
But there was something that he shouldn't have said
Now the dead man walking is dead
