Lyrics

I had the strangest dream last night, but that's not what this is about
I've made great strides but lost my footing on the pathways past my doubts
I can see the sunlight fracture in the mirrors when they move
I can hear my own voice calling from the far side of the room
It says, "The past buries the past but can't control its own descent"
And on the desk was the Athena statuette
If you arrange them right, objects will answer when you call
A Roman Janus amulet and an engraving on the wall
But when I lose the line dividing curation from clutter
Between dream and memory, authentic and reproduction
I'm reminded the North Star returns after every sunset
And on the desk was the Athena statuette
Too often I can't identify what's judgment and what's joke
And those distinctions shift when whispered through a beard of thickening smoke
I can see my own reflection in a broken marble bust
But I can't see the point in speaking if I don't know who to trust
So instead, I pen confessions in a private alphabet
And on the desk was the Athena statuette
I get tangled in arrangements where I can't tell who's in charge
I ask fate to leave me be and then resent its disregard
Every visit, there's a new relic, another oracle
But collections have their limits, and the room is almost full
The gap keeps widening between what's right and what is best
And on the desk was the Athena statuette
There's oil in the water, and it's true the two don't mix
But they can conjure rippled rainbow shimmers if the right light hits
Unfailingly, time takes its toll, but age increases value
Sometimes I can't even manage to give up the dust I've gathered
All that I've lost was stolen or I gave up under duress
And on the desk was the Athena statuette
I had the strangest dream last night, I couldn't tell you if I tried
It wasn't Hell or Heaven but another other side
A familiar figure uttered in an unfamiliar voice
"The artifacts you analyze are nothing but broken toys."
Then the terra cotta crumbled, and a jade curtain rose,
And a bronze-bodied goddess stood at center stage alone
"You can all see one thing," she said, "and each reach a wrong conclusion
You see empty hands and think I lost my spear; in truth, I used it"
We pretend to see a hard line between treasure and target
But myths take place outside of time where faith can falter in one breath
Solace is knowing there's someone else with an open-wounded chest
And on the desk
