That's ever been thought of

You're grateful to exist in the same universe

As people who make such beautiful things like Radiohead albums and birthday cakes

And all the classics of English literature

That you've enjoyed

You often think of yourself

In situations that demand sacrifice

You hope you'd have the courage

To jump in front of the bullet

You're deathly afraid of heights and falling in love

And your hands get sweaty

At the slightest touch of nervousness

When you were young you'd daydream about being

Showered in the adulation of raving, obsessed fans

Perhaps you'd be a movie star or a great musician

Or something like that

You have always been good at the

Things you try your hand at

Not great, but good

You were stung by a wasp once

In the backyard where you used to play

You carry with you the memory of that pain

And you're wary of stinging insects

Despite the many years since you last angered a bee Or a hornet, or any such creature

You never really excelled in any team sport,

Though you did play

And relished those moments when you impressed Your peers or otherwise felt the warmth of victory

You used to keep a diary, which you called a journal

But you lacked the discipline

To write in it consistently

You'd pick up where you left off a few years later And remark as to how foolish and naive

And young you used to be

That feeling never really goes away

I want you to understand

That I'm reminding you of all of these things

Not out of a sense of obligation

But because human beings

Have a funny way of perceiving time and its passing

Seconds turn to minutes turn to hours turn to days Turn to weeks turn to years turn to decades

And then to dust

And the most important moments

As short as they were

Stick out in your mind

Obscuring the mundane, routine days that

Molded you into the person you are at this moment
