Lyrics

My whole life, they told me something was wrong with me
And for my whole life.. I fought 'em. Told 'em they were wrong
Then came the flash of light. December '23
And the wiring that was already frayed.. it just snapped
I spent my childhood in a series of white-walled rooms
Staring at some therapist who was tryin' to predict my doom
They'd ask me how I'm feelin, but I'd never say a thing
'Cause how the hell do you describe the chaos that the silence brings?
So I was labeled, I was a problem, another broken toy
Just a difficult, misunderstood, angry white boy
And I carried that damn title like a cross upon my back
The proof that I was different, always headed for the crack
Years later, found another one, an office clean and bright
He listened to my story 'bout the flash of blinding light
He heard about the darkness, the struggle, and the dread
Then tried to jam a bunch of fuckin' happy pills inside my head
He said"Son, with trauma like this, you're disabled, can't you see?""You never have to work again, just let the system be"
I stood up from his leather chair and looked him in the eye
Said"You don't know a goddamn thing" and left without goodbye
'Cause I was a problem, a glitch inside the code
Carryin' a heavy, unexplainable load
I was a problem, the one they couldn't fix
Just a walking cocktail of my own destructive tricks
But the darkness kept on comin, I finally hit a wall
Had to make another phone call before I lost it all
And in that waitin' room, at twenty-eight, the panic hit me hard
My whole life's defenses shattered, every single playin' card
For the first time in my life, I started to believe the lie
That maybe I was broken, that maybe I should die
So I walked into that new room, ready to admit the sin
Of being me. I finally broke, let all the poison in
The tears I'd held for years came down, I couldn't stop the flood
I told him"Man, they're right, I am the problem, it's in my blood"
I waited for the judgment, for the nod and for the pills
For him to tell me all about my long list of social ills
But he just leaned in, and he looked at me, and said with a calm grace"There's not a single goddamn thing that's wrong with this whole place"
He said"That engine in your head that never seems to stop?"That's a high-performance race car, man, you just gotta learn to drop"it into gear. That chaos ain't a weakness, it's a gift""This ain't a curse, my friend" he said"This is a paradigm shift""What you have is a superpower, you just gotta learn to aim"
And in that single moment, he completely changed the game
'Cause I ain't a problem, I'm a force you've never known
On a different kind of mission, on a different kind of throne
I ain't a problem, I'm a father, husband, and a friend
And the battle with myself is finally comin' to an end
He taught me how to train it. How to guide it. How not to be afraid
He showed me that the darkness I was buryin' so deep.. was the same place the light was made
Now I see my wife, and I don't just see her.. I feel the love she gives
I see my kids.. and I feel the reason that this broken man still lives
He helps me take the negatives.. and turn 'em into fuel
He didn't fix me. He just showed me I already had the tool
And that's a gift.. I'll spend my whole damn life trying to protect
For them.
