Lyrics

They say it was the mayor who cried
"Too many men upon the rocks have died
A beacon must be built anew"
And so a granite lighthouse grew
Tree of stone straight and true
Five long years the lighthouse grew
Steps were hewn straight and true
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
To the sky the granite grew
A man we need to guard the light
To live within both day and night
Man of stature strong and stout
To keep the light from going out
John Henry was the man no doubt
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
High above the lamp did cast
Across the stormy waters vast
Henry's lonely life untold
All alone and growing old
Up in that lighthouse tall and cold
One winter's morn above the tide
He spied a body cast aside
Through telescope confirmed it true
And down the steps in haste he flew
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Across the rocks, along the shore
To find a maiden drowned for sure
With fair white skin and fiery hair
For two long weeks she lay in care
While Henry daily climbed the stair
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Her tale was told, he understood
But all he saw was pure and good
He loved her more than any could
A month went by, the two alone
In the granite house of stone
A loving couple it was said
And shortly after so were wed
Rose petals strewn across their bed
Nine months went by, a child was born
A love together, a granite home
All together, total care
And with a smile he'd climb the stair
Two hundred steps and twenty two
So the year went slowly by
Falling seasons, rising tide
A lamp to guide poor sailors home
Solid house of granite stone
John Henry no longer alone
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
Two hundred steps and twenty two
