Lyrics

We made our home in stacks of rocks
Lived, we lived in finest ply
A kitchen made of wood and clay
And in the heart, in the heart a fire
And the wind would blow
And the snow would go
We'd collapse in bed almost every night
Review our lives with great delight
I would rise before the sun
And make coffee on an iron stove
Read the word and say my prayers
And pray together as the day begun
Kids are all the same
Just different clothes and different games
In the end they just want to love and play
They don't care where you're from
Or what is your name
We loved the kids, and they loved us
And the people they loved us too
They made space in the fires
And space in their lives
For these welcomed strangers from outside
We shared drinks and clothes and potatoes
And shared some laughs and sometimes cried
But jealousy sowed bitter seed
In the ones who claimed control
They came to town from lower down
That meeting was a trap
As they discussed what to do with us
The people realized that
Ultimatums and reports verbatims
Spiritual blackmail and dogmatic threats
Us or them, loyalties straining
Each way filled with regrets
I met my friend on the way that very day
His face was the saddest I'd ever seen
He cross-examined me over tea
He was living between two mountains
A rock and a hard place
The next year crept by
Just because they're done with us
Don't mean God is done with them
Don't worry, guys, we understand
But take a stand for yourself
Don't take the lives you're handed
