Lyrics

She kissed him one time right between the eyes,
Like he was a dog or a little child.
Her lips were cold from whatever they’d been drinking,
And his heart started racing like something wild.
And he never said a thing about that feeling,
He just closed it all away.
But he can still feel that kiss between the eyes to this very day.
‘Son, you better lighten up,’ she said,
‘remember, you’re a long time dead’.
The journey out and the journey back
- he has no idea where she could be now.
When he thinks of the lipstick on the rim of the glass,
His heart takes a dive in the second round.
In the back room of the Duke of York in the later part of the night,
He still thinks he sees her now and then,
Among the mirrors and the lights.
‘Son, you better lighten up,’ she said,
‘remember, you’re a long time dead’.
Sometimes the past slows you down -
You have to drag it around like a ball and chain.
And sometimes it keeps you up all night,
Like fever dreams or growing pains.
While some of us get the stillness, and others get the shakes
- the ice caps turn to lemonade,
And the heart slowly breaks.
‘Son, you better lighten up,’ she said,
‘remember, you’re a long time-’.
Her eyes so blue and her lips so red,
He felt temporary, like a dying king.
And the kiss was such a sweet surprise,
It fell upon his brow, like a beautiful sting.
Now it belongs with all the other souvenirs
In the fading past –
And his heart still races, but just not as fast.
‘Son, you better lighten up,’ she said,
‘remember, you’re a long time dead’.
