Lyrics

he said my name is Andrew Gooding, sir
apprentice to the draper
but I've not come to sell you wool
I've something else in store
though I'm young I've made a name
as a drawer and a painter
I hear you'll be sailing soon
and I aim to be aboard
the captain looked him over and said
no whiskers on the chinny
no sea legs and yet he begs me
sign him on the spot
the boy said I'm no salty dog
but I've been wet aplenty
and if you've got no naturalist
then I'm the best you've got
and it's hot pitch in the devil seam
new rum in the barrel
off to see what ain't been seen
damn the death and peril
gone a month and spirits high
skies and wind good faring
when of a night a gale did blow
and wake us pitch and sway
one went up to fast a rope
got drowning for his daring
but by the eve the wind was gone
and all were drunk and gay
the captain knowing sailing men
and would the boy not be roughed
he offered him his table
and his stories of the sea
he told him of that mythic land
the Terra Incognita
unbeheld by captain yet
but none the likes of he
and it's hot pitch in the devil seam
new rum in the barrel
off to see what ain't been seen
damn the death and peril
it was on the coast of Diemen's Land
to get new wood and water
the midship mate did see the boy
undressing for to bathe
and he acted on his passions
when he saw the son was daughter
the captain heard the struggle
but he came aground too late
afeared the boy was murdered
he ran a cutlass through the sailor
then stood over the bodies
frozen with surprise
for the Gooding boy was Annie Green
daughter of the draper
he carried her back to the ship
and there he watched her die
two months we sailed until the ice
permitted us no further
a weary crew, our rations low
returned to native shore
the captain told the draper
of the ruse and of the murder
returned young Annie's brushes
and went sailing nevermore
and it's hot pitch in the devil seam
new rum in the barrel
off to see what ain't been seen
damn the death and peril
it's hot pitch in the devil seam
new rum in the barrel
off to see what ain't been seen
damn the death and peril
