Lyrics

Well, it's raining tonight just like that night so many years ago
When I was walking down the street through the pouring rain
Looking for a dry place to go,
So I stopped under the awning in front of an old drug store
I stepped inside, took off my mac, and hung it on the coat stand by the door
The old man sweeping up the shop looked up and gave me a little smile;
He said he was getting ready to close, but I could stick around and talk awhile
He gave me a history of his sixty-three years, and how he grew up in this town,
And I told him of my twenty-odd years, and how I'd been all around
And I said, "Old man, don't you get kinda lonely living all of your life in this town?
The road sign says the population is three hundred and slowly going down
You always see the same old faces, you're always in the same old places,
And I just can't understand why it don't bring you down
No, old man, I just can't understand why it don't bring you down."
The old man just shook his head at me, said, "Grab a soda"; it was his treat,
So we went to the counter with the stools and the fountain and the both of us took a seat
I spent 45 minutes talking of adventures and my travels all over the land,
And I told him, "I'll keep traveling all of my life because I don't want to be a lonely old man."
The old man looked at his pocket watch, and saw that it was almost ten,
And he said that he had better be hurrying home
Because his wife would be worrying about him
So we grabbed up our coats, turned off the lights, and he locked the door with his key,
But before he headed off through the pouring rain, he turned back to look at me
And he said, "Young man, don't you get kind of lonely living all of your life on the road?
You have no home to come home to, and you have no wife to hold
You never see your old friend's faces, you're never 'round those good old places,
And I know one day you'll understand when you're old
Yes, young man, I think you'll understand by the time you're growing old."
Well, it's raining tonight just like that night so many years before
I traveled down the street just to see the old man, but he wasn't in the store
I looked through the dirty window at the empty shop
And saw where the fountain had once been,
And I wondered what had happened to the old man and the empty store that I'd just seen
So I headed on across the street; the rain beating down on my mac
I got in my Chevy, I unrolled my blanket, and I stretched out in the back
Well, it's been many long years and many long miles since that night of which I told
And I came back tonight to let him know he was right; you see... I think I'm growing old
And he said, "Young man, don't you get kind of lonely living all of your life on the road?
You have no home to come home to, and you have no wife to hold
You never see your old friend's faces, you're never 'round those good old places,
And I know one day you'll understand when you're old."
Yes, old man, I think I understand. I guess I'm growing old
