Lyrics

The lid taps a tiny beat on my palm,
steam curls up like restless writing,
apples and cinnamon harmonizing in the cup—
I sip the peace and keep moving.
The crosswalk blinks its patient signs,
white squares turning into small islands;
I jump them like a quiet game,
the city counting, one gentle square at a time.
Someone left a scarf on the rail,
it waves me through in recognition.
A bike bell sketches a silver circle,
landing on my shoulder and rolling off laughing.
My shoes learn to rhyme with the curb,
heel, toe, heel, toe—cider steps, cider steps—
each one warm enough to mist the evening,
each one a small stove under my socks.
A receipt escapes my pocket like a paper fish,
flapping toward a puddle that dreams of the ocean.
I rescue it, fold it into a ship,
and launch it down the gutter to a friendly drain.
Window glass rehearses fog and clarity,
like a memory trying on new coats.
Inside, a baker dusts with sugar snow;
outside, I pretend my breath is weather.
Cider steps, the cup a little sun,
orbiting block by block, gravity gentle.
The crosswalk hums again—yes, now,
I walk the melody crafted for shoes.
A bus exhales, tired but polite;
its lights blink an apology I accept.
A leaf hitchhikes on my sleeve,
asks for two more corners, then promises to fly.
The lid rattles when I laugh;
I swear cinnamon grins back.
If the night had a mailbox, I’d leave a note:
“Returned warm, please forward autumn.”
A cat edits the alley, tail erasing drafts of wind I didn’t like.
Somewhere a kettle signs in steam;
I sign with a sip tasting like a story to keep.
Cider steps—whistle the hook, keep it low—
my breath writes music on the rim,
the street writes harmony in chalk,
and the sky nods in woolen approval.
By the time the cup is empty,
my hands know the neighborhood by heart.
I tuck the lid in my pocket like a medal,
and let the last sweet vapor crown the air behind me.
