Lyrics

For ten long years, I saw the peak
Everest was my obsession
I quit the junk food, started slow
Then serious mountain work
My apartment became a gym
Oxygen tanks were everywhere
My legs were hard, my lungs huge
Fitness was my new reality
I studied maps and weather charts
Read every climber's book
My coach, Brad, said, "Focus on the data!"
My nutritionist, Susan, added, "Fuel the mission!"
They sent daily, practical advice
"Maintain your pace! Stay hydrated!"
I booked the flights, the guides, the gear
Every cent was accounted for
Up the mountain, mile by mile
Pushing onward with a painful smile
Through the snow and the freezing air
The top was almost there, almost there
Base Camp to Camp Four, a brutal track
My body screamed, but I ignored it
The air was thin, the view incredible
The planet's highest point was near
I saw the fixed ropes, the ice fields
A determined expert, giving my maximum
The final push, the final section
Just maybe one hour more
I was creeping forward, seeing success
The world was far beneath my boots
My brain, however, started to calculate
"Is this pain worth the remaining ten feet?"
I looked at the summit, right above me
And recalled Brad and Susan's core advice
"Remember the planning is the achievement itself"
(But also, "Hit the target at all costs")
Up the mountain, mile by mile
Pushing onward with a painful smile
Through the snow and the freezing air
The top was almost there, almost there
I stopped. I looked up. It was so close
The wind was a terrifying, icy roar
I thought about my warm sofa at home
And my unwatched TV series list
I considered the effort of those last steps
And the long, dangerous climb back down
I said, to the cold, empty atmosphere
"I proved the training worked. That's enough"
I slowly turned, and started my descent
No regret or feeling of failure at all
Everest is permanent, folks
It is not moving or going anywhere
I fulfilled my goal; I got extremely close
But a nap was the highest priority now
So I simply quit
And honestly? It felt absolutely right
Keep climbing if you like, it's still there for you
But if the tank is empty, just go home. Seriously
