Lyrics

My unc was a street legend way past his prime
My mom was a storm no doctor could calm down
My grandma played guitar like she prayed with her hands
My childhood felt like a battlefield with no soldiers
You gotta know where I'm from to understand me
I grew up where angels don't walk
I grew up where heat don't stop
Life hit young, and I took every shot
You gotta know where I'm from to really know my heart
Skipped class, stomach sick, lost boy on the block
Running from the chaos in the house nonstop
Came from frostbit nights and a mind full of knots
You gotta know where I'm from to get to know my God
My mom was fighting demons only she could hear
My unc was older, world never felt clear
Sis took the damage, I took the fear
We were kids in a storm that lasted for years.
Got chased out the house with nothing but feet
Detroit winter wind cutting straight through me
That frostbite night still lives in my sleep
The world felt cold long before the streets
Grandma tried to save us with chords and grace
Handed me a guitar like a lifeline in space
Taught me music was the one safe place
Gave me a voice when the world gave me pain
I ain't have no role models, just damage
Learned survival way before I learned balance
Had to unlearn fear just to manage
My whole childhood looked like a bandage
And no one ever prayed for me back then
But God did, quietly, again and again
I grew up where angels don't walk
I grew up where heat don't stop
Life hit young and I took every shot
You gotta know where I'm from to really know my heart
Skipped class, numb inside, pain all in my thoughts
Hiding from the memories like hiding from cops
Came from frostbit nights and a mind full of knots
You gotta know where I'm from to get to know my God
Got older and the world didn't get much kinder
Found opiates and tried to blind the blinders
Twenty years lost to a poison reminder
Addiction turned me ghost - God turned me survivor
Friends dying young, I was next in line
Didn't wanna live but didn't wanna die
Prayed for help in a whisper one night
And He pulled me out the wreckage of my mind
AA meetings hit me like heaven in a room
Broken men finding light through the gloom
Six months clean, breath tasting like truth
God showing me the man I'm becoming from the ruins
Everything I went through
It ain't random
It ain't wasted
The childhood, the chaos, the addiction
All of it prepared mefor who I'm becoming and for who I'm meant to help
God saw me when nobody else did
I grew up where angels don't walk
I grew up where heat don't stop
Life hit young and I took every shot
You gotta know where I'm from to know God's heart
Skipped class, smoked weed just to soften the shock
Pain in my bloodline, hurt in my uncle
But He turned my ruins into something on top
You gotta know where I'm from to know why I do
