Lyrics

Whoever put the hex on me
'bout nearly done me in
And what they paid the Root Doctor
Was wages of their sin
He's not a man to trifle with
But trifles are his trade
From broken hearts to evil eye
The people seek his aid
It's just a taste, a little taste
You'll never even miss
Some spirits for a spirit, boy,
Not on a night like this
I knew I had a problem when
He stood outside my home
Just chewin' on an evil root
And mumblin' all alone
His eyes pure white, the surest sign
Of what the man had done
The root-juice trickled down his chin
The Plat-Eye soon would come
I racked my brain for who I'd wronged
A lover or a friend?
I guess it didn't matter now
This curse they couldn't end
It's just a taste, a little taste
You'll never even miss
Some spirits for a spirit, boy,
Not on a night like this
The hammer dropped a few nights past
As I was amblin' home
The Plat-Eye came for me that night
When I was on my own
The thing can shift to any shape
You know it by its smell
That little hint of sulfur scent
The wicked know so well
He was standing at the crossroads
My uncle and my kin
But something wasn't right I felt
About the way he grinned
You're just in time, my uncle said
To help an elder soul
I'm in a pickle, nephew mine
My hound fell in a hole
It ain't real far and with your arms
We'll drag the puppy out
Just come along a little ways
I think I hear his shouts
My legs 'bout gave out under me
This was no uncle mine
The Plat-Eye stood before me here
And meant to make me blind
I had no salt, no iron cross
But then I got to think
I'd heard the Plat-Eye goes all weak
When tempted with a drink
He stretched his fingers towards my head
A'reachin for my eyes
I knew what he was after then
To claim his favored prize
Oh uncle let us take a sip
Of whiskey 'fore we go
My fingers shook around my flask
The Plat-Eye's face aglow
He downed it all and cackled deep
And vanished on the spot
I'll never walk at night again
I'll keep these eyes I got
It's just a taste, a little taste
You'll never even miss
Some spirits for a spirit, boy,
Not on a night like this
