Lyrics

Yeah…
Downtown Kansas City…
Main Street.
Empire Theatre.
Back when a dollar stretched,
and memories lasted longer than the movie.
Let me take you there…
Back on Main Street, marquee lights glowin’ bright,
Empire Theatre nights, city buzzin’ after twilight,
Opened way before us, but it raised a generation,
Screens wide as dreams, cinematic elevation.
By the 80s four screens, dollar tickets on the wall,
We was posted every weekend, felt like we owned it all.
Curt D stay cool, never doin’ too much,
Herman smooth with it, always had the perfect touch.
Ross swear he had options in every single room,
Different girls, different movies, different seats, same tune.
Me? I did my thing, but I keep that sealed tight,
Gangster and a gentleman, some stories die with the night.
Empire nights, city lights, yeah we all was dreamin’,
Main Street memories playin’ like a film scene,
From the court to the screen, we was really livin’,
Empire gave us moments they could never give back again.
Put a dollar in the tank, Dave Ross behind the wheel,
Gas cheap, dreams heavy, everything felt real.
Hoop all day, hit the crib, shower quick, no delay,
Empire after sundown, that was always the play.
Posters on the walls, smell of popcorn in the air,
Couples in the corners, young love everywhere.
Movies cost a dollar, so we stayed on repeat,
Knew every aisle, every creak in the seat.
Females I won’t name, yeah they already know,
Moments in the dark where time moved slow.
Laughter in the lobby, jokes we never let go,
Life felt simple when the credits rolled slow.
Empire nights, city lights, yeah we all was dreamin’,
Main Street memories playin’ like a film scene,
From the court to the screen, we was really livin’,
Empire gave us moments they could never give back again.
After the movie, outside wildin’ on the cars,
Ross and Brim pee wars, swearin’ innocence hard.
Act like nobody knew what the other one did,
We was cryin’ laughin’, just some grown-up kids.
Back to the court, then back to the screen,
Livin’ whole days inside one single scene.
Empire closed in eighty-five, lights finally dimmed,
But the memories stayed rollin’ deep within.
Now Main Street changed, paint over history,
But you can’t erase what the city did to me.
From hoop dreams to mic checks, I carried it forward,
Empire made a king out of kids who couldn’t afford it.
Empire nights, city lights, hear the echoes callin’,
Main Street memories never really fallin’,
From the court to the screen, yeah we had it all then,
Empire gave us moments that time still keeps callin’.
Empire Theatre…
Where time slowed down and life sped up.
Where a dollar bought escape,
and memories bought forever.
Downtown Kansas City raised us different.
If you know, you know.
Yeah…
