Lyrics

When the stranger came to town with his magic and a smile
He offered me an elixir and said, "Take this for a while
It was made from the grapes and grains that once grew across this land
Before the devils came and stole them. Now drink this or be damned."
Then I drank the strange elixir and it tasted sweet and clean
And I ran out in the sunshine to lie beneath the trees
But as the cold crept across the ground
I feared these devils of the night
So I lay still without a sound, but they stayed hidden from sight
So I waited for the stranger and he greeted me again
The danger now was greater. There was darkness, storms, and rain
"Those devils are getting stronger, I fear the die will soon be cast
The crops," he said, "are failing. Act soon or the time will be past."
Then I took another elixir and I drank it with some haste
For I feared that I was not ready. I could not leave chance to fate
Can the stranger save my soul if darkness comes around?
Will this elixir give me heart if he cannot be found?
When in his wagon shining bright, the stranger returned to town
He offered me more elixir, but now it cost a crown
"What price a little pain to drive these devils out?
And make this land yours again or lose it without a doubt."
So I drank down fast and deep, the taste bitter and sweet no more
And I could barely quench my thirst to keep the devils from my door
But I fear I've lost the love of my family and my friends
Though I warn them of what awaits when the darkness does descend
I have never seen the devils. They hide still out of sight
I reach for this elixir to stop my doubts from finding light
