Lyrics

I’ve never been wrong about a long con
Well, I’ve been wrong twice – but it was hot before it was bad
And it took everything I had
Everything I had
And I would do it again
I’m settling in for a good old-fashioned spin
Of that fortune’s wheel – slowly build up the reveal
I’ll try to charm you to bits with all my flattering wits
Till you’re here in my arms
Well it might take a year, or maybe three, or maybe a dozen
Till we’re simply buzzin’ with longing
Well I’ll use misdirection, good honest connection
If there’s no objection to gay old conceptions of longing
The timing is right for a well-planned heartsick heist
You know I love a game
A challenge is fuel for my flame
And the brighter we burn, the more my heart aches and yearns
To tell you how I feel
Well it might take a year, or maybe three, or maybe a dozen
Till we’re simply buzzin’ with longing
Well I’ll use misdirection, good honest connection
If there’s no objection to gay old conceptions of longing
Well I’ve never been slick, this ain’t no dirty kind of trick
And if eventually you decide that you’d rather decline
I’ll almost certainly feel sad
But I won’t make you feel bad
I’ll take you at your word
Cause you’re a very nice kind of person
And I really like hangin’ out with you
And I also like thinkin’ about braiding your hair
That’s a normal thing to think about
But I promise I’ve worked a lot on boundaries in therapy
Somethin’ I like to do
I don’t do the things that I used to do anymore
Like one thing, for instance, is that I would before
Have found out what coffeeshop you like a lot and then
I’d go every day and every hour just to find out
When you’d go to that coffeeshop and
I would spend a couple months doin’ just that
Until finally we ran into each other
And you’d say, “Wow, what a coincidence”
And I’d say, “It’s definitely a coincidence and
Not just something that I planned very carefully
With spreadsheets and calendar invites
Tryin’ to find out just what you like”
Oh I don’t do that anymore, I respect space
And so if you decide you don’t want nothin’ to do with me
I will leave you alone
I will leave you alone
I will leave you alone
