On an evening much like this one

When the moon was shining like the sun

It was just as bright as daytime

We knew that summer had finally begun

I remember trying to talk to the whippoorwill

Two little girls from their bedroom window sill

I remember trying to talk to the whippoorwill

When I close my eyes, I can hear them singing still

Tried to find you with a flashlight in the night

Counted to one hundred and then you were out of sight

But the roses giggled, and it gave you away"Your turn now, you count", then I was on my way

I remember trying to talk to the whippoorwill

Two little girls from their bedroom window sill

I remember trying to talk to the whippoorwill

When I close my eyes, I can hear them singing still

Try to whistle like him, and he'll sing back to you

Let me try it again

This time I think he heard us, yes, he's singing back to you!

(Instrumental)

Fireflies need air, they can't live in a jar

When you take the lid off, they will fly away like stars

Watch them twinkle away headed home for the night

Oh, I hope the whippoorwill will sing with us tonight

I remember trying to talk to the whippoorwill

Two little girls from their bedroom window sill

I remember trying to talk to the whippoorwill

When I close my eyes, I can hear them singing still

Then I close my eyes

I can hear them singing still
