Lyrics

At fifteen I'd already met the law,
Blame the TV shows I saw—
Dukes of Hazzard, Miami Vice…
Looked so fun we didn't think twice.
We watched the outlaws and thieves,
Breaking rules in every scene.
So walkin' around late at night,
Teenage boys lookin' to prove we're right.
A pretty blue Mustang on a dealer's lot—
Looked around once… doors weren't locked.
A twist of wire and a minute to spark,
We piled in laughing, tore out in the dark.
Yeah, yeah
We left the lot swervin' and slidin',
That night we put the joy in joyriding.
Our shouts echoed down the street—
We never learned how to be discreet.
Farm kids loose on a Friday night,
We were Sure we were built for the outlaw life.
Most cruisers stayed on a six-block square—
We figured we'd meet some girls out there.
Swung by the mini-mart, snuck out back with beer,
Pulled into a parking lot with some girls near.
Makin' friends didn't take long
Them girls left with us - blastin' our songs
Yeah, yeah
We Left the lot swervin' and slidin',
That night we put the joy in joyriding.
Our shouts echoed down the street—
We didn't know how to be discreet.
Inside it was all arms and legs, hands and feet,
A tangle of teens cruisin' the street.
The thrill of livin' was thick in that ride—
Hung in the air 'til the moment it died.
Out of gas and out of luck,
Walked for miles 'fore somebody picked us up.
As we left, I wrote a note tryin' to make things right:
"Thanks—this was the best night of my life."
I propped the note up on the dash
With twelve crumpled dollars—all my cash.
Yeah, yeah
We Left the lot swervin' and slidin'—
That night we put the joy in joyriding.
Shouts echoed down the street…
We never did learn to be discreet.
