Lyrics

I was alone in Tahoe
'Cause that's where law school started
A life I never wanted
Yet something I was sure would make your dad take back his words
That I could never make you happy
I smoked a pack of dark blue Spirits standing on the stateline
Poured twenty dollars into slot machines
Trying to build some distance from the fears I knew would come true
When you reached out to me
I remember the wounds of waking up without you were still fresh in my mind
You were done and you moved for school to memphis at the time
You told me you had done a walk down Beale street when you thought of me
Like every time I heard a song that said your name
And you were sure of how much I would love it there
And I was so numb and just agreed
And if I remember, that was the last time we'd ever speak
I woke up in New Orleans
About six years later in a haze
So much had changed, I lost my faith
Blacked out and drove through states both on the map and in my mind
And came to in a panic downing hurricane after hurricane
I knew you'd find your husband in Memphis
And I've long worked through that grief
I was feeling all new kinds of trauma
But didn't want to drive home yet to worrying family and friends
So I fucked off to Beale street
And in the morning I walked down it it was freezing cold and empty
I realized I was there to chase a dream that had long died
And try to calm an inner child that spent the last eight months crying
I was spiraling, I couldn't recognize myself
But I knew I needed help
I just knew I needed help
One day I came back to Memphis
In a better state of mind
By then, people were back outside
I just stopped touring and I saw the ducks
And bought a redneck hat at the pyramid
All to build some courage to go back to Beale street
Guess I was worried there'd be nothing for me there when I went back
I walked the river, then made a left around sunset and I saw the lights come on
And felt the atmosphere
And took a slower breath
And let myself melt
I had a feeling you'd be right
I just needed to find it for me
